Pregnancy and constipation
Constipation is a common condition for many pregnant mothers, and is mainly caused by the changing levels of the female hormone progesterone, which naturally inhibits the movement of food and waste through the digestive tract. The problem may be further complicated during pregnancy by the pressure of your growing uterus on the rectum. Iron, which pregnant mothers make take as a supplement, can often make constipation during pregnancy worse.
Some tips for providing relief from constipation:
Ask your GP about taking a fibRE supplement or switching to an iron supplement with less iron if you need extra iron in your diet.
Exercising regularly in moderation - eg. Walking, swimming, riding on a stationary bike, and yoga - can all help constipation and leave you feeling more healthy.
