Saving Water by Growing Plants in Hydroponics Gardens
Growing plants without soil in a controlled environment can also reduce costs of water and, in some cases, electricity. The field of hydroponics, which means growing plants without soil, is very environmentally friendly. Traditional hydroponics gardens only use 1/20th of the water used for an equivalent amount of plants in an agricultural setting. This makes hydroponically grown plants more water efficient compared to agriculturally grown plants. Sometimes artificial lighting is used to supplement sunlight in hydroponics gardens, which means that there is an electricity cost, however, low-wattage bulbs have been used by NASA to successfully grow plants in an aeroponics garden.
