Starting Beekeeping – Ordering Packed Honey Bees

When you start beekeeping and order a bee package dispatched through mail will have a screen surrounding it and a canister of sugar water within the package for the bees to eat during the journey. To separate the queen from the other bees, a cage is used. A three-pound package of bees can cost between $50 and $70, plus shipping.

After you move the honey bees into the hive(s), the worker bees from a package will require food for a short time until they commence to accumulate nectar and pollen and make honeycombs to generate their own food, and that is not done by a ready-made bee colony. If you decide to order a package of bees, it is important to do so at the right time. Learn more about ordering and buying honey bees.
