Historical Development of Distance Learning

distance learning was invented when various teachers in America especially Caleb Phillips started giving assignments to students to send back on weekly basis, then Isaac Pitman in Great Britain practiced but it became popular with development of postal service in 19th century. It helped commercial and educational service nation-wide. First giant leap was University of London’s offer of External Program in 1858 which triggered distance learning as a defined and proper program. Another educational institution was University of South Africa which started offering such program in 1946. Most prominent university in United Kingdom is Open University which was founded in 1969 and besides this now, there are hundreds of other universities offering such learning.
