Obama’s Immigration Goals
President Obama’s administration has outlined a plan for immigration reform that would allow the 14 million people living within the United States borders illegally a way to get legal residency. They say that it would not be a simple task and those who seek to become legal would have to learn English, register, pay a fine, complete a criminal background check, and pay all the taxes that legal residents pay. They believe this will help employers and immigrants in the country to be successful in their work.
Some groups oppose the changes that the Obama administration wants to put in place. The Federation for American Immigration Reform does not want to grant amnesty or residency to people here illegally, and they want to lessen the flow of immigration in the future. They believe this will help the very low unemployment rate and the schools struggling to deal with the children of these immigrants.
