Strict Rules About Fencing Gear

Fencing organizations in the United States have fairly strict rules about what fencing gear should be worn by their athletes. This particularly applies to competitions.

Prior to checking in for a match, each athlete is required to have a weapons check in which the mask, lame jacket, gloves and body cords will be closely scrutinized. Each fencing jackets must have a croissard or groin strap. This keeps the jacket from riding up and exposing the midriff.

The underarm protector, worn on the sword arm, is known as a plastron. Every athlete must wear one, as well as a breast protector, knee socks, and a fencing glove, which must cover half the forearm.
